Me-Made-May ’12: Day 14!

Woooo!  Happy Monday, everybody!  Because I’m unemployed right now, I spent today hanging around the house with the intention of sewing up a storm, but… a few sort of unpleasant tasks that have been hanging over my head called out to me, and I opted to forgo sewing in favor of some deep cleaning.  I just finished cleaning out my kitchen cabinets, throwing away food that was long past its expiration date (I have to admit I found some stuff waaaaaaay in the back that expired in 2006… eek!!), cleaning out my medicine cabinet and bathroom cabinet, and going through all the tupperware/storage containers that we’ve accumulated.  I filled three garbage bags with junk!  Phew!  It feels good to have that over and done with.  Yuck.

I guess it’s somehow fitting that I picked out my oldest (well, first) me-made item today.  I felt like I did a really shoddy job on this dress, so I haven’t really worn it since I made it.

dress: me-made Butterick B5211

necklace: Rare Bird

I have to say, I like this more than I thought I would.  It’s a little boxy, but that kind of grew on me throughout the day.  But I’d forgotten that I screwed something up with the button closure in the back so it constantly comes undone.  Gotta sort out a fix for that.  Also, this mother is SHORT!  I don’t know what I was thinking!  Must’ve had a flashback to my So Cal college girl days without realizing it!  I guess I could wear it with tights, but I’m not super fond of them, so I’ll probably just save this for hot days around the house when only Doug is around to be scandalized by my pasty-white thighs!

  1. I recently threw out a few pantry items that had expired 5+ years ago too!! It happens…
The dress is cute on you, I like the color. Looks grey but with a bit of blue/green to it.
Way to go Ginger with all the MMMness!

    • It’s a sort of strange chambray, blue and gray shot with black. Re: the pantry– it’s awful how time slips away! I’ve been putting off cleaning out the cupboards for so long, and suddenly here we are!

  2. The laundry basket has gone! You had a productive cleaning day. I can normally only do one major cleaning task at a time as it takes so long. The dress looks cute!

  3. I’m so jealous that you got to spend the day cleaning. I love the feeling of a clean apartment. The dress is not bad at all! Sometimes the simplest silhouettes are the most flattering. I think that it could be considered a tunic and worn with pencil leg pants and flats. So so cute!

  4. Ahhh 2006 isnt so bad. My boyfriend recently found some All Spice in his mothers kitchen cupboard that expired in 1994. She was pretty mortified about that one 😛

    • Thanks! I’m really, really fond of this necklace– I bought it this month when I realized that I don’t really have any accessories, and I love it! She’s got a really cool Etsy shop!

  5. This is what this challenge can make happen- rediscovery of things you’ve forgotten about. It looks stylish to me, but wayyyyyy too short for even round the house for me…..leggings might make me feel safer! Not that you should worry, its a look you can carry off.
You should have a halo all that cleaning and organising..

    • I think I’ll have to wear it with leggings from now on– I felt very self-conscious walking the dog and taking out the trash! My neighbors are all old people, mainly Italian, Greek, and Croatian, so I felt very scandalous setting foot outside the house in something so skimpy!

  6. That colour! Absolutely love it! And yeah, I know what you mean about cleaning out the cupboards. I did it at my parents place and dumped 6 boxes of (opened) green tea in front of my Mum! Her face was a classic mix of bewilderment and horror at having so much!

    • Oh, gosh, I don’t even want to talk about how many kinds of green tea I have! Every time I see a new kind, I just *have* to have it, although I rarely drink it at home! Silly.

  7. Ahh cleaning, I’ve been trying to get rid of our junk too. Funny how it just builds up eh?
That is actually quite a cute dress, wish my first item was that wearable! lol!

  8. The dress is so cute! Perfect for wearing with skinny jeans and tall boots. Although, you’d fit in at any college campus (or high school…the horror!) with that length of skirt. Kids these days!

  10. It’s so cute! I would wear it all of the time. And that necklace is darling. I have a bad habit of making stuff too short, too. Meh.

Oooh, I’ve been doing some serious spring cleaning as well. It feels so good to unload.

well done on all the spring cleaning. I did something similar last month and it felt so good to have a clear out (even though the actual cleaning was no fun at the time!).
