Crazy Dog Lady Sewing Challenge!!!

Um, obviously, the second I heard about the Crazy Dog Lady Sewing Challenge, I knew I had to join in! Cause… OBVIOUSLY. Really, I’m always looking for an excuse to fly my freak crazy dog lady flag! I love love love dogs, and love sewing, and any chance to combine the two is bound to be PURE MAGIC. OK, about the challenge… it’s hosted by Tanya, Carlee, and Sophie-Lee, and really, all there is to it is to sew something dog-themed, dog-related, or for your dog before March 15th. Easy! So, fellow freaks dog ladies, there’s plenty of time for you to play along! Get stitchin’! I already had the perfect fabric in my stash, this horror show digital print from Spandex House (they have a super weird website that’s really hard to search, but there’s a very similar dog print spandex here). I’ve had this fabric for a while and was super happy to have a nudge to sew it up! [Sidebar: Spandex House is the PERFECT place to go to when you’re looking in your closet and realize you don’t have any stretchy clothes featuring French fries/clownfish/bananas/guns AND roses… you can find all those prints there, as well as many more that no one would EVER want.] I mean, theoretically, it’s possible to love something without feeling the need to plaster it on your body, but I mean, if you CAN plaster the thing you love all over your body, it would be WRONG not to! So I figured leggings would use as much of the print as possible. I used the Megan Nielsen Virginia leggings pattern… I’ve made it twice before and it’s a piece of cake to sew up. I keep forgetting that I need to go up a size, but next time I really will. They fit just fine, but when I put them on, I hear the terrifying sound of stitches popping. But realistically, even if I split the crotch of these babies midday, that still probably won’t be as embarrassing as the fact that I’ll be a 32-year-old in puppy print leggings (ESPECIALLY if I use the leftover scraps to sew a matching running top… can’t wait to terrify the neighborhood!)! I’m already pretty sure these two don’t want to be seen with me: Moms are sooooooooo embarrassing, am I right? OK, friends, will you be getting your Crazy Dog Lady on? Any pug-related projects in the pipeline? Do tell!!

  1. awww, so cute! love their little jackets. I tried to put a scarf on Penny the other day but she immediately started ripping it to shreds, so I don’t think I’m going to be making anything for my dogs any time soon.

    • Thanks, Sara! Doug is a real brat about wearing clothes and will only consent to it when it’s SUPER cold out… otherwise he freezes in place and acts like he can’t move. He’s such a drama queen!

  2. Ha ha, awesome leggings! Not sure if I’m going to make anything for me, but I did make my dog a quilt out of scraps, and he loves it.

  3. These are awesome Sonja!! I feel the same way as you, any excuse to meld my two greatest loves together – pugs & sewing. Woo hoo! And Doug & Peg look adorable as always!

    • The only tragedy here is that there aren’t any pugs in the print! I have a pair of Vans with a very similar digital dog print (do you have those? someone else does…), and they have pugs!

  4. Awesome! I’m so tied up with work currently that sewing has taken to the furthest backburner there is 😥 I’ll whip up something for my furbaby next season.

Also, what is Peg wearing? It looks ~fabulous~ with the extra fur trim.

    • Awww man, I’m sorry you’ve been so busy! That’s lame!

Peggy’s got a RTW pink coat underneath her… wait for it… Chewbacca harness. 🙂 Doug has a Darth Vader one, but his fits under his coat. 🙂

  5. I have seen this print and often wondered what can be made out of it. It is too darn cute to pass up. Love the idea of puppy print active wear! I don’t think “awwww” has ever been used to describe leggings until now.

    • That’s kind of my feeling about everything at Spandex House- interesting, but… what would you do with it? Didn’t stop me from buying a bunch of weird stuff one day when I was “motivating myself to exercise”. Yep, haven’t exercised since that day, ugh…

  7. Ace! They’re fab! If you made a running top and wore them together then it would look like a one piece….we call those cat suits in the UK…a dog catsuit.. Haha ✂️😀✂️

  9. OMG, that last photo is way too good! I would totally frame that and place it on my desk if that wasn’t such a creepy weird thing to do. Also, spot on about Spandex House! What is it with some of the fabric prints in there?!?! I need some French fry leggings in my life.

    • I dare you!! Make French fry leggings with a cheeseburger top!!! 😀 Also, frame away! If any of your coworkers ask about it, just tell them it’s you in the picture and don’t allow any follow-up questions! 😉

  10. So funny! We people who sew sometimes forget that, yeah, we might get weird looks for the dog leggings out in the “real world”. But of course, I must whip up a pair. I will have to remind myself they are “sleepwear” or something house-y, because it’s worse when you’re my age. People start to think you need home health care.

Do you think that fabric would work for some Rose Hip tights?

    • Just checked out the pattern and there’s definitely enough stretch! The fabric is quite stretchy with good recovery, so it would probably be a good choice. It’s pretty thick and opaque, and very synthetic, if that helps!

    • Heeheeheehee! I need to motivate myself to run… it’s been a long time, Debbie! The pugs are the best… I was never sold on little dogs until I met Doug, and they’re just so snuggly and sweet!

    • The old folks already think I’m crazy with my two silly dogs… sometimes I wish I understood Greek and Italian so I’d know what they were saying when I walk past! But maybe it’s for the best that I don’t! 🙂

  12. I’m glad you finally used this fabric! It’s so crazy to sit in a cupboard. now you should play a game of “how many people will mention my leggings when i wear them in public?”

  13. Aww, so fun! I don’t think I’ll be able to work that challenge in this year, for obvious reasons–does it count that everything I’m sewing here gets covered in Golden retriever hair, and the diaper stuff at my parent’s house is getting coated in German Shepherd hair? (Incidentally, in sorting through free baby clothes I’ve been given so far, I keep finding lots of things with dogs on them!)

  14. Now those are some crazy dog lady pants! You should totally make the bra too, I’m in full support. I wanted to do this project, but it doesn’t look like it’s happening 😦 I have a vision but can’t find the perfect fabric. This is one of those very few times when cats outdo dogs in the novelty market.

    • Yes! Do it! I wanna make another matching sweatshirt for Peggy and I, but need to figure out how to tweak the pattern to fit her better first. Rochelle… I’ve signed up for a patternmaking class in a month.. FOR PETS. Get excited!!!

  15. You always crack me up. I won’t be making any dog-themed things but I can live vicariously through you! 😀 I did the cat lady challenge though, lol! I’m all for fun items that are a little loony. Life’s too short to be so serious 🙂

  16. Peg and Doug want to know why you don’t have fabric made with their photos is all! How have I not heard about this challenge before?! Too awesome!

  17. Aaah these are so darn awesome!!! 😄😄😄 you should totally make a running top out of that fabric 😜 if ever there was someone that could get away with wearing dogs all over while running, it would be you. (Or Oona….)

I has plans to make trousers for the boys with a cotton drill I have that has paw prints and bones on it. Yay!

  19. aahaaa your puggies are so cute as well as your leggings! Yep any excuse to sew me up some crazy dog fabric I’m all in. Currently working on my project and much to Vito’s dismay he’s getting something sewn up too.

  20. I love the leggings and the pugs! So cute and so grumpy looking -like they hate that you’re taking their photo! I totally used to be a cat person, but I’m gradually turning into a dog person!

    • I think they were mad at me that their walk (and by extension, breakfast!) was being delayed! Dogs are the best, and pugs are basically cats… they sleep all the time, just wanna sit by your lap, and, I’m not kidding, Doug plays with a ball of yarn like he’s a kitty, even though he doesn’t like dog toys!

  21. Gah – you are too adorable. I have seen cat equivalent of this fabric and really have regrets of not buying it. I still don’t know why I didn’t. Your leggings are all kinds of awesome!!
